The Vikings were known for their lavish celebration and food culture. Communal feasts were an important part of Viking life, and a celebration didn’t always require anything more special than successful hunting spoils or a birthday. Viking feasts were known, above all, for their abundance of food and drink: dining was a social event where people ate together from large wooden or stone bowls. Viking meals were often noisy and joyful occasions where people talked, drank beer, and enjoyed good food.

The food on the Viking table was very simple, yet at the same time, very tasty. Food was generally seasoned simply with salt, honey, and various herbs. The table offerings included meat, fish, and vegetable dishes obtained from nature. These delicacies were prepared on an open fire or in an oven and typically served from large vessels from which all guests at the table could take food.
